Frequently asked questions
Where does this earthquake data come from?
All earthquake data on OpenTremor comes from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) real-time GeoJSON feeds and its FDSN event service, which publish events from the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) Comprehensive Catalog. OpenTremor does not detect or locate earthquakes itself.
How often is this page updated?
The USGS refreshes its real-time summary feeds about once a minute. When this page is open in your browser it requests the latest past-24-hours feed every 60 seconds. If that request fails, you see the saved copy and the time it was taken.
Why does the magnitude or location of an earthquake change?
The first numbers for a new event are usually computed automatically. Seismologists then review the data, and the USGS may revise the magnitude, location, and depth. An event marked "reviewed" has been checked by a person.
What is a PAGER alert?
PAGER (Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response) is a USGS system that estimates likely fatalities and economic losses after significant earthquakes. Its alert levels are green, yellow, orange, and red, with red meaning the highest estimated impact.
Is OpenTremor an earthquake early warning system?
No. OpenTremor only lists earthquakes after the USGS has published them. The USGS ShakeAlert system issues early warnings for California, Oregon, and Washington through apps, phones, and other delivery partners.
How many large earthquakes happen in a year?
Between Oct 28, 2025 and Oct 28, 2026, the USGS catalog lists 7,782 earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater worldwide, including 140 of magnitude 6.0 or greater.
How this page works
OpenTremor reads the public USGS summary feeds, keeps a saved copy so the page loads quickly and can be indexed, and then asks the USGS for fresh numbers once a minute while you have it open. Magnitudes use the type reported by the USGS for each event (for example ML, Md, Mb, or Mww).
